ARLINGTON,
TEXAS - In 2007, Russia and the United States will celebrate
the 200th Anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations.
It will be commemorated by a series of joint events at intergovernmental
level, as well as through public and cultural contacts.
In
commemoration of this 200th Anniversary of the Russian-American
Diplomatic Relations and The Year of the Russian Language, The Russian
Cultural Center "Our Texas" in co-operation with the Consulate
General of the Russian Federation in Houston will present the premiere
of Carmen Suite performed by Metropolitan Classical Ballet and featuring
a guest appearance by Marianna Ryzhkina - principal ballerina with
the Bolshoi Ballet. The performance will take place at 7:30 PM on
October 26, at the Cullun Theater, Wortham Center, 500 Texas Avenue,
in Houston, Texas.
In
addition to Carmen Suite, music by Georges Bizet, choreography
by Alberto Alonso, the Company will also perform Pas De Quatre,
music By Cesare Pugni, choreography by Jules Joseph Perrot, and
Bonjour Brel, music and lyrics by Jacques Brel, choreography
by Eddy Toussaint. All three ballets will be staged by Alexander
Vetrov.

Russian
Cultural Center Our Texas is a non-profit organization interested
in expanding Russian cultural awareness in Texas. The organization
in involved in organizing events for the Texas Russian community
as well as generating interest among the American public in Texas
and in promoting talented Russian artists.
Metropolitan
Classical Ballet is honored to be a part of the commemorative celebration.
Alexander Vetrov, Artistic Director along with Paul Mejia, was born
in Russia. In 1979, he joined the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre where he
achieved the status as the lead principal male dancer. In 1985,
he was awarded the Gold Medal from the Fifth International Ballet
Competition in Moscow. In 1995, he had the distinction of being
the recipient of the Honored People's Artist of Russia, the
highest honor given by the Russian President. Mr. Vetrov became
a citizen of the United States in 2006. Many of the Company dancers
are also from Russia.
Carmen
Suite will be among the works performed during the opening performance
of Metropolitan Classical Ballet 2007 / 2008 season. Mr. Ryzhkina,
a familiar guest with the Company will play the title role. Information

Metropolitan
Classical Ballet, recognized as one of the leading dance companies
in Texas, was founded in 1997. Artistic directors Paul Mejia and
Alexander Vetrov are two well recognized names in ballet. Mr. Mejia,
former dancer with the New York City Ballet who danced principal
roles in many Balanchine ballets, carries on Balanchines style
and artistic vision though his acclaimed choreography. Alexander
Vetrov, former leading male principal dancer with the prestigious
Bolshoi still maintains close connections with the Bolshoi today.
The Company performs at the prestigious Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass
Performance Hall in Fort Worth, and presents its annual production
of The Nutcracker at Texas Hall, at the University of Texas
at Arlington. Located in Arlington, the administrative office and
spacious state of the arts studios are unsurpassed in the North
Texas area.
