| Mrs. Vandergriff, who died July 4th, was passionate about supporting the arts in her hometown of Arlington, and was especially fond of The Nutcracker. She was married to Tom Vandergriff, mayor of Arlington from 1951 to 1977. He later served as Tarrant County judge.
Based on an old German fairy tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa in 1891. The delightful two-act ballet is set to the musical score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Metropolitan Classical Ballet’s unique and charming production, choreographed by Alexander Vetrov, is especially captivating for young audience members, who love the wind-up dolls, beautiful costumes and dreamlike magical storyline.
This year, subtle enhancements to Mr. Vetrov’s choreography and the addition of a new character will add to the delight of the audience. Company members will be joined by students from the Metropolitan Ballet Academy who will dance the numerous children’s roles. The Academy is the official school of the Company.
Special performances of a condensed version of The Nutcracker will be presented for students of the Arlington Independent School District and other area private schools. The performances are part of the Company’s Children's Cultural Enrichment Program, and will be held on December 7th through the 10th. They are not open to the public.
