FWSO presents Bank of America Discovery Concert featuring Peter and the Wolf
THIS CONCERT IS SOLD OUT. NO MORE FREE CONCERT PASSES ARE AVAILABLE.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 5, 2005
FORT WORTH, Texas - The Fort Worth
Symphony Orchestra and Metropolitan
Classical Ballet bring the cherished story of Peter and the Wolf to
Bass Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 30. Admission is free
to the Bank of America Discovery Concert, but tickets are required and must
be requested in advance through the symphony's website at www.fwsymphony.org
starting January 14.
Sergei Prokofiev's classic work for children-a symphonic fairy tale in which
each character is represented by different orchestral instruments-becomes
a theatrical and musical event. The story tells of how young Peter ventures
into a meadow, against his grandfather's orders, to catch a wolf. Together
with his animal friends he catches the wolf using only a rope lasso, becoming
the hero of his village. He
hands the wolf over to some hunters, and all of the characters of the story
come together in the finale, where the wolf is taken to the zoo in a triumphant
procession. A favorite of children and adults alike, the performance is the
perfect introduction to classical music in a casual, family friendly environment.
FWSO Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts the concert, while Paul Mejia,
co-artistic director of the Metropolitan Classical Ballet, provides the choreography.
This performance will be narrated in both English and Spanish, by Claudia
Acosta, as part of the FWSO's ongoing community outreach efforts.
"Becoming excited about music is what our Discovery concerts are all
about," said Katherine E. Akos, FWSO president and CEO. "We want
new people, especially children, to experience the performing arts. We're
delighted to be able to present this concert in English and Spanish, allowing
us to reach a broader segment of the community."
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 30. Admission is free of
charge, but tickets are required. Tickets may be requested online only at
www.fwsymphony.org
or by mail at 330 E. Fourth Street, Suite 200, Fort Worth, Texas, 76102, starting
Jan. 14. No phone reservations will be accepted. Seating is general admission
by section. Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
The FWSO's Discovery Concert is
made possible, in part, by the generous support of Bank of America. Promotional
support is provided by the Star-Telegram and WRR Classical 101.1 FM.
About Peter and the Wolf
In 1936 Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by the Central Children's
Theatre to write a light-hearted piece for children, one that would
introduce the instruments and sounds of the orchestra. He completed
Peter and the Wolf in just four day's time, and it is a work still
loved by both children and adults.
